The Foolishness of God

Moses, Noah, Abraham, Hannah and Ruth - What do all these Biblical characters have in common to one another? They were crazy! Crazy in the sense that what they did, went against the norm and made no sense. Moses told the Hebrews, he was sent by I AM (Exodus 3), and they were going to be free of slavery. Noah built an ark (Genesis 6) when it hadn't rained on the Earth. Abraham took his son Isaac, who was the Promise of God fulfilled, to sacrifice him (Genesis 22). Hannah begged for a child of her own. When God gave her the child, she gave him back to God. Presenting her son, Samuel, to the Priest and he would become a great Prophet (1 Samuel 1). Ruth would not leave the side of her mother in law (Ruth 1), even when there was no reason for her to stay with Naomi .

When we read these Biblical histories, these people do things that are out of the ordinary human spectrum. Pull your Bible out and read each account. Would you do these things? Would you be willing to do something out of the ordinary, something that would make you seem crazy? Have you walked out in your faith and done something completely out of your comfort zone? In the last couple of years I have been walking this out with the LORD. Doing things out of my comfort zone. It seems God likes it when I trust what He has put in my heart and He works out the rest of the details that should worry me.

Strawberry Picking. Family Trip to Maine. 2019

In May of 2018, I left the workforce and have been working on a degree from Grand Canyon University's College of Theology. In this time, my family and I have had to make some sacrifices and adjustments but nothing too major. There have been many friends and family members who have questioned my decision. Some who have said, "you have to work", or "what are you gonna do all day" or "you guys can't live off of one income". Believe me, I was unsure of this move from the very start but God answered all my doubts. God has provided for every single one of our needs in these last 2+ years. We haven't gone hungry, we haven't had our electricity shut off, our bills are paid in full every month and we have even taken a family trip or two.

Those things are important in the everyday needs of my first world life. The funny thing is I had to make decisions like do I want a flowerbed with flowers or a vegetable garden? Because we couldn't afford for me to do both. I love to go back to this experience because I decided to plant veggies, you know because food is always more important than having flowers. But I really love flowers. What happened in those months is amazing and just proved to me how much God loves me and was truly with me in this endeavor. As my veggie garden took off, so did my flowerbed. With the little bit of Spring rains we got here in the desert, the flowerbed began to sprout what I thought were weeds...and eventually were flowers. I hadn't planted any of them and yet God knew my heart and how much I truly wanted both. I took this as His way of telling and showing me He is always with me, listening to my hearts desires.

My Miraculous Flowerbed 2019

People thought I was foolish for going about life the way God had told me to. God directed me to start school - Not my plan. God basically removed the job I held for 9 years - Not my plan. God directed me to only go to school - Not my plan. I had to believe what my faith said and trust God completely. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, "For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength." 1 Corinthians 1:25 NIV. The Pulpit Commentary says, "the method, that is, whereby God works, and which men take to be foolish and weak, because with arrogant presumption they look upon themselves as the measure of all things." Humans think that we know best, we know exactly how things are to be done. Man wants things to make sense, to work in such a way that seems right to us, and to always put our own knowledge before God's. I would much rather rely on the foolishness of God than the ways of humanity. I believe what God has called me to even if it doesnt make sense in the natural because God is supernatural. God is beyond the box in which we try to put Him in and work within.

What I have learned is this...if God is calling me to something and 1) I know I am not qualified for, 2) has given me an unexpected passion and desire for, and 3) has provided when it seemed impossible then I have to trust He knows what He is doing. If you have gone through some of my little blog here you noticed my "life verse" - TRUST God, LEAN NOT on my own understanding, and ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, He will make my path (direction) straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. Last week I participated in Grand Canyon University's virtual graduation. As I come to the end of my education and this season of waiting, I am at a crossroads yet again...Go my way or wait on the LORD to show me the next steps.

How would you answer the foolishness of God? Would you be afraid to be mocked? Could you completely trust God and what He is telling your heart? Read the histories I mentioned, and pray about what is on your heart. God will definitely reveal and speak to the depths of your heart, as He was the one who created it (Psalms 139).
